Juggling can feel precarious, and understanding tools, approaches, and collaboration skills for digital libraries can be difficult. Yet, somehow, the show must go on. While we, in libraries and archives, do not work for a circus, we might feel like acrobats juggling disparate projects and shifting priorities, serving in multiple roles at work and at home, and learning different digital tools that keep us connected with our users and teams. 

We are proud of our community’s ability to adapt, adopt, support each other and thrive under the big tent. We also think that all of us have earned the right to feel exhausted, contented, annoyed, thrilled, and / or adventurous about our one-handed prowess or (sometimes) dropping all the pins. For many, and in many contexts, juggling is fun and entertaining. For others and in other contexts juggling is hard work and exhausting.

Therefore, the 2022 TCDL Program Committee is delighted to announce that the theme of our 15th annual Texas Conference on Digital Libraries will be Digital Juggling. We invite you to consider any and all of the ways that the concept of Digital Juggling applies to your work in libraries and archives.

Come one, come all to the greatest library conference on earth to share your journey in digital libraries!

TOPIC IDEAS

The following list covers broad topics related to the theme of digital juggling and / or to digital libraries work that the committee hopes to see at TCDL 2022. 

Present ideas about who we are

  • Sharing and incorporating perspectives from underrepresented and / or minoritized communities and narratives working in digital libraries or archives
  • Nurturing professional skills and career paths
  • (Re)framing traditional roles of academic libraries / archives and the people who work in libraries and archives

Share ideas about how we work

  • Finding meaning and balance (or not) while juggling many roles
  • Supporting campus initiatives using institutional repositories, academic journals, research support, digital asset management, or other digital library systems
  • Fostering collaborations across departments, schools, and/or institutions
  • Supporting interoperability across platforms and systems
  • Using creative, collaborative, and / or joyous methods in the development and promotion of digital libraries and archives (ex: gamification)
  • Transitioning projects when there are multiple / conflicting priorities (messy or smooth pivots welcome!)

Discuss ideas about what we do

  • Software development acrobatics! (e.g. creating software or developing  applications)
  • Growing and / or maintaining the greatest Open Access, Open Science, Open Education, or other open initiative shows on earth
  • Performing feats of digital preservation 
  • Improving accessibility in digital libraries
  • Integrating digital systems into new spaces or roles
  • Analyzing and assessing digital library collections

The above list of ideas is by no means exhaustive and proposed topics outside of this list will be considered. All are invited to submit a proposal!

PRESENTATION & SESSION TYPES

TCDL 2022 will take place online. Sessions may be pre-recorded* or delivered live during the conference. We will use Zoom for all presentations and conference events, and most sessions will be recorded and published on TDL’s YouTube channel. All sessions will be moderated by a member of the TCDL Conference Planning Committee.

* All poster trailers will be pre-recorded. For more inspiration, browse previous years’ successful proposals in our conference proceedings.

Presentations – 

General talks on practical work, theoretical or speculative issues, or ongoing completed research

  • Timeframe: 15-20 minutes; 10 minutes for Q&A (moderated by TCDL)
  • Format: Live Zoom meeting; moderated Q&A (live)
  • Session length: Presentations are usually paired by topic / theme for two or three presentations per hour-long session. 

3 Minute Posters –

 Virtual Posters with a pre-recorded explanation / “elevator pitch.”

Workshops / Demonstrations – 

In-depth instruction on important areas of digital library practice or demonstrations/tutorials of useful tools and technologies. 

  • Timeframe: Events in this category can range from 1 to 2 hours
  • Format: Zoom meeting or Zoom webinar (live)
  • Session length: Workshops are a single, stand-alone session. 
  • Proposals should include: Objectives/outcomes for the session, Target audience, Tech requirements, Prerequisite knowledge or experience, Time expectation

Birds-of-a-Feather – 

Roundtable discussions about a particular topic.

  • Timeframe: 45 to 50 minutes
  • Format: Zoom meeting (live)
  • Session length: Roundtable discussions are a stand-alone session. 
  • Proposals should include: Topic of discussion, Intended audience, and Agenda for meeting

NEW SESSION TYPES

Let’s try something new this year! We hope you will enjoy playing with new session types to shake up your presentation style and experiment with flexibility. And please scroll down for an invitation to learn more and attend a CFP co-working session in January. 

Reverse Workshop – 

Brainstorming session about a particular problem or issue. This session type is new to TCDL and will allow the presenter to describe a problem or issue within their institution, and seek real-time feedback and strategies from attendees. The issue should be related to digital libraries. 

  • Timeframe: Events in this category can range from 1 to 2 hours
  • Format: Zoom meeting
  • Session length: Reverse Workshops are a single, stand-alone session; 15 – 20 minute description of issue, 45 minute brainstorming session (flexible)
  • Proposals should include: Problem or issue to be discussed, target audience, tech requirements, prerequisite knowledge or experience for the target audience, time expectation

Show and Fail – 

Short talks about programs, initiatives, workflows, or strategies you lead or participated in at your library that didn’t work out as hoped. This session type is new to TCDL and will celebrate risk-taking rather than success.

Here is the information you will need to submit your proposal:

  • Submitter name and contact information
  • Name and contact information for co-presenters and/or co-authors
  • Proposal title
  • Presentation type
  • Abstract (250 words or less)
  • Keywords / themes: Please list up to five keywords that describe your presentation. 
  • Agree to TCDL’s Code of Conduct.
  • Agree to publishing your recording and presentation materials with Texas Digital Library.

Now in its fifteenth year, the Texas Conference on Digital Libraries (TCDL) is a home for communities of library and information workers who support scholarly, cultural heritage, educational materials, open access, open source, and transparency in libraries through digital preservation, repositories, metadata, theses and dissertations, scholarly communications, and research data management. TCDL honors its roots in digital librarianship while also including the work that many other library workers, archivists, and various information professionals do to build, improve, provide outreach, expand, and use digital library resources and ecosystems of scholarship.
